These pages
show photos taken during a trip from London to Auckland and around North
Island, New Zealand (with very brief visits to Christchurch and Japan)
in April 1999. Click on each photo for a larger image.
Siberia - from the air
Pacific Ocean/South Island - from the air, also South Island from the plane - we spent 45 minutes there, at Christchurch Airport.
Rangitoto - volcanic island (now dormant), near Auckland.
Te Awamutu/Waikato River - Rose Gardens, Finn & Partners/Ngaruawahia, Huka Falls
Auckland - including Ferry Building, Mount Eden, Takapuna, Dominion Road, North Head. Maori stick game and poi dance.
Waitomo - you are not allowed to take photos in the Glowworm Caves, so these are links to photos by other people. It was a fascinating place to visit.
We drove from Waitomo to spend the night at Rotorua. On the way we stopped the car to look at a clearer sky than I have ever seen, or have much chance of seeing, in the UK. No sodium lights - wonderful view of the Milky Way (more stars than in the UK) and the Magellenic Clouds. The one thing I couldn't get used to in New Zealand was the sun and stars going round the 'wrong' way. I've been familiar with the constellations for years, it was weird seeing them 'upside down'. I can usually read a map, and often use the sun to get my bearings, but having the sun in the north, instead of south, as I'm used to, got me totally confused!
Rotorua and the Thermal Region.
Japan - a very short visit, less than a day in Osaka.
