Article in the cassette liner notes/CD lyric booklet |
The music score to "Death In Brunswick" plays a major part in establishing the atmosphere of the film. Although the film centres around the Anglo Saxon lead character, it is set in a Greek owned nightclub in an inner city suburb with a large ethnic population. The majority of supporting characters are of Greek and Turkish origins.
"It was important that the music help establish and enhance this atmosphere while at the same time maintaining a strong contemporary flavour" said Ruane. "We considered a number of composers before we decided on Philip Judd. He is a great melody writer and we knew that as long as the arrangements and instrumentation were right we would get that mixture of contemporary and ethnic that we needed".
Philip had just completed the score to "The Big Steal", for which he won the 1990 Australian Film Institute Award for Best Original Score, when commissioned to compose the score for "Death In Brunswick".
Best known as a founder member of Split Enz, Philip spent seven years with the band writing the majority of the band's early material. He wrote "Counting The Beat", a number one single in 1980 for his next group, The Swingers and is currently a member of the critically acclaimed band Schnell Fenster, whose second album is scheduled for a May 1991 release.
He composed the score to Gillian Armstrong's feature "Starstruck" and wrote six songs for Wendy Matthews to perform in "Rikky & Pete" prior to scoring "The Big Steal" and "Death In Brunswick".
While Philip enlisted well known Melbourne musician Peter Volaris to compose three uniquely Greek pieces for "Death In Brunswick" he composed the balance in his home studio. Once the themes were written, Philip engaged a combination of Australian and Greek musicians to assist in the recording.
"It was an extremely challenging assignment" said Philip. "Although melodies are melodies the world over the expression of those melodies takes a variety of forms in a geographical sense. Scoring 'Death In Brunswick' meant coming to grips with arrangement techniques and instrumentation I hadn't worked with before. I even taught myself to play bazouki, in a very rudimentary fashion, I might add."
The result is an excellent example of Philip's creativity. The music significantly enhances the atmosphere of the film through out and as added bonus, the individual themes maintain their integrity and in fact assume another dimension when presented in isolation.
With "Death In Brunswick" Philip Judd has created another piece of work which can only enhance his existing reputation as one of the most brilliant and original musicians of his era.
