Matinee Idyll title image

Beautiful Girls (US 1996)

Set in a small town in Massachusetts. Willie Conway (Timothy Hutton) returns home from New York after some years and finds his friends from high school stuck in dead end jobs.

Director: Ted Demme

Original Score by: David A. Stewart (of the Eurythmics)

Split Enz - "I Got You" (Neil Finn) (part of) while Paul (Michael Rapaport) is waiting in a truck, about ten minutes into the movie.

"Several times, when Paul is driving his truck, we hear '80's music' like 'The Breakup Song-they don't write songs like that anymore' and 'Ran (I run so far away)' by Flock of Seagulls. Paul is somewhat stuck in adolescence, with pictures of supermodels draping his walls and a pet dog named Elle MacPherson.  When Paul is alone on screen, the music heads back to the 80's where Paul stopped growing emotionally."
